Nicole Smart

Nicole Smart is the founder and principal consultant of Smart EDI Solutions, LLC – a consultant
company aimed at guiding clients to effectively power up their diversity, equity and inclusion
(DEI) programs and initiatives to achieve optimal results. Her passion for leveling the playing
field for people in the workplace as a DEI advocate stems from her formative years in the U.S.
as an immigrant from the twin island of Trinidad & Tobago, where growing up in the trenches of
Brooklyn, NY has taught her how to be courageous, resilient, studious, and a visible champion
for change.

Having begun her career in affirmative action for the Contractors Training Development
Office/Dormitory Authority State of NY, she furthered her professional expertise by serving in a
variety of roles at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu’s - Global HR Department and facilitating the
player grievance procedure in labor relations at the National Football League (NFL). She later
transitioned to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) responsible for developing
and implementing programs in their Leadership Development and Office of Inclusion
departments. Smart went on to become the first-ever diversity director for Actors’ Equity
Association, where she led their objectives for greater inclusion and diversity within the union,
and the broader professional live theater community serving a community of over 51,000
members.

As a consultant, Smart provides services to start-ups, small to mid-size organizations and
nonprofits, across a variety of industries including tech, healthcare, beauty, media, sports and
entertainment, and is a member of the New York Women's Chamber of Commerce. She has
been invited to speak on a variety of platforms and have given talks and conducted training and
workshops nationally on anti-racism, professional development, unconscious bias, sports and
workplace culture for the BBC-UK Radio Sport Today, Spirit Awards: A Celebration of Diversity,
Chief - Women of Color Getting to the Top, Generation USA, IBM - Building a Championship
Culture, NYU Women of Excellence, Strength and Tenacity, New York Jets, DEI and Black
Lives Matter - Predictive Index, Theatres of Revolution: Performance, Pedagogy and Protest,
USA Today, WGBH and Women 2.0.

In addition to running her company, Smart is an adjunct at NYU’s Preston Robert Tisch Institute
for Global Sport teaching Professional Franchise Operations to graduate students, and also
serves on several boards including the advisory board for Cornell University’s Sports and
Entertainment Executives, and board member/professional development chair for the WISE
NYC Metro Chapter, where she has successfully implemented events beyond the scope of core
programming for women in sports.

Smart received her master’s degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University
and a Bachelor of Science degree in Leadership and Management Studies with a concentration
in Organizational Management and Development from New York University.
