Born to musical parents, music has always been a huge part of Toiya’s formative years. Listening intently to the harmonic blends of her parents, both at home and in the church choir, it was no surprise that this Los Angeles native began exercising her vocal abilities at the early age of 8. Branching out to take formal vocal lessons apart from her family, she also studied piano and drums, all of which shaped her strong musical foundation.
Today Toiya is a seasoned worship leader, becoming one of the most sought after musical talents in many Southern California churches. She has served at Full Harvest International Church, Benny Hinn Ministries, Hope of Glory Christian Center and currently serves at Canaan Inheritance Worship Center under her Pastors Owen and Audrey Black. She has also provided background vocals for the incomparable Donnie McClurkin, Johnny B. Williams, Judy McAllister, Micah Stampley, Calvin Bernard Rhone as well as the iconic Shirley Caesar and R&B artist Monica during the 2001 BET Gospel Celebration.
In her quest to keep a fresh, versatile and cutting edge musical perspective, Toiya branched out from her church choir beginnings to provide background vocals and production work for an A-list of major recording artists such as Tim Miner, Gavin Rossdale, Seal, producer David Foster, Lionel Richie and Raphael Saadiq. Additionally, she also sang background for the American Idol finalist Clay Aiken and second season winner Ruben Studdard in 2003.
Toiya B. has cultivated her sensational style with the musical influences of artists Jill Scott, Luther Vandross, India Arie, Anita Baker, Faith Evans, Lalah Hathaway, Whitney Houston, Fred Hammond, Jonathan McReynolds and Mary Mary. Deep sultry tones displayed throughout inspirational selections on her sophomore project “El Elyon” assert it is undeniable that this neo-classic soul songstress has a style uniquely her own and soon to be an unparalled force to be reckoned with.
